Lubrication
Bicycles don't work well without lubrication - like lot's of things. So without metaphorically getting into deep water or going into lengthy explanations as to why ball bearings need to be lubricated to stop them getting worn away by the ingress of water and grit, you'll just have to take our word for it. There aren't many cars around that would last more than a few miles without oil and bikes are no different.
