Toe-Clips
If you're not sure about using clipless pedals (they do take a bit of getting used to and can be a bit of pain when you're riding in traffic) then you go half way by attaching toe clips with or without straps. These will both help keep your foot in the correct place on the pedal but they won't stop you getting your foot down on the road quickly in an emergency.
